Crop Report: End of Summer Favorites
September 9, 2021
Thanks for checking in! The crisp air this morning really felt like fall. The front porch of our Farm Market is loaded with pumpkins, gourds, squash, corn stalks, straw bales and mums. It's officially autumn! Full list of apple varieties and farm fresh produce to look for this weekend to follow.
This week we harvested Cortland and Fuji apples for the Farm Market. Here's a little info about these varieties.
Cortland is a customer favorite for applesauce and apple butter. They are sweetly-tart and very juicy. Cortland makes for a great all purpose apple
Fuji is one of our favorites for grabbing on the go as a quick snack. They are very crisp, juicy and sweet. We love to pair them with peanut butter. They also make a great addition to salads and cheese boards.
Apples available for pick-your-own this weekend (as supplies last): Jonathan, Cortland, Macoun (very similar to McIntosh) Click HERE for more information about u-pick at our orchard.
As excited as we are for all things fall, we're still loving all of the summer produce. The possibilities for farm to table meals are endless as this point in the season! There's nothing better than when the summer and autumn harvests mesh.
Here's some inspiration for your weekend meals. We can't get enough of the heirloom tomatoes, this week's harvest brought some beautiful Cherokee Purple, Brandywine and Pineapple heirlooms. They make this recipe for Pesto Caprese Chicken. Links to recipes below photos.
Brentlinger's fresh picked sweet corn is the highlight of our summer. A corn chowder is the perfect way to end sweet corn season. It's an excellent cozy dinner when you're not quite ready to give up summer. Link to recipe below.
This recipe for Peach Ricotta Layer Cake is too delicious not to share. We've been freezing up peaches like crazy. If you haven't made yourself a little stash of frozen peaches for the winter months, there's still time. A couple jars of peach jam stored away is always a good idea too!
